Control What You Can Control – My Journey Through High-Risk Breast Cancer Screening

As women, we often become experts at caring for everyone around us.

We schedule the appointments, remember the school events, refill the prescriptions, and somehow keep the wheels turning for our families. Yet when it comes to our own health, many of us wait until something feels wrong before we pay attention.

I’ve learned that one of the most powerful acts of self-care isn’t a bubble bath or a yoga class—it’s preventative care.

Recently, I enrolled in a high-risk breast cancer screening program. While that may sound scary, I view it differently. It is not a declaration that something is wrong. It is a commitment to staying informed, proactive, and empowered in my health journey.

Prevention is an Act of Strength

When we hear the words “high risk,” fear can easily enter the conversation. Fear of what we might find. Fear of the unknown. Fear of having to make difficult decisions.

But fear does not have to be the driver.

Knowledge allows us to make informed choices. Early detection creates opportunities. Preventative care gives us options.

Strength isn’t pretending everything is fine. Strength is having the courage to gather information and care for ourselves before a crisis forces us to.

The STRONG Connection

Preventative care aligns beautifully with the STRONG framework we practice at Rise STRONG Yoga Co.

Why This Matters for Every Woman

You do not have to be in a high-risk program for preventative care to matter.

Preventative care includes:

  • Annual wellness visits
  • Mammograms and breast screenings
  • Colon cancer screenings
  • Routine blood work
  • Mental health check-ins
  • Dental and vision care
  • Managing stress and inflammation
  • Consistent movement and exercise

These practices aren’t signs that something is wrong. They’re signs that you value your health enough to protect it.

A Love Letter to Your Future Self

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is the opportunity to catch problems early—or prevent them altogether.

The future version of you deserves the care you’re capable of giving today.

If you’ve been putting off a screening, delaying a doctor’s appointment, or ignoring symptoms because life feels too busy, consider this your gentle reminder.

You matter.

Your health matters.

Your future matters.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s responsible. It’s empowering. And sometimes, it’s one of the bravest things you’ll ever do.

Today, I choose preventative care not because I live in fear, but because I live with hope. Hope for more healthy years, more memories with my family, more yoga classes, more laughter, and more opportunities to share this journey with all of you.

That is a future worth investing in.
